Top 5 Special Moments of
Tokyo Olympics 2020
Sports' Biggest Festival
The 32nd Olympics in Tokyo featured 11,656 athletes from 205 countries. While the stats are impressive, several unusual moments made this edition truly historic.
1. Medals from Recycled Waste
Japan collected Electronic Waste (E-waste) from its citizens over two years to create 1,040 gold, silver, and bronze medals. Additionally, 98 podiums were built from 24.5 tons of recycled household plastics.
2. Double Gold Victory
In a rare moment not seen in 108 years, Gianmarco Tamberi (Italy) and Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar) shared the Gold Medal in the Men's High Jump. Both athletes were crowned winners, and no silver was awarded.
3. Silent Stadiums
For the first time, fans were banned to curb the pandemic. This empty-stadium policy led to a loss of approximately $815 million in ticket revenue for the Japanese government.
4. Self-Service Medals
Athletes had to pick up their own medals and put them around their own necks to maintain social distance. This "self-service" podium ceremony was a historic first for the Olympic games.
5. Maiden victories
Three countries made history by winning their first-ever Olympic medals:
- Turkmenistan: Polina Guryeva (Silver)
- San Marino: Alessandra Perilli (Bronze)
- Burkina Faso: Hugues Fabrice Zango (Bronze)
